In My Inbox: Book Reports for 7th Grade, The Ultimate eBook Creator, and Instagram!

Hi Readers,

It’s been a year since I posted an IN MY INBOX feature from earlier, so I thought I’d update you all on some emails:

LETTER ONE FROM ERICKA:

I was wondering what format you happen to use for writing. For instance Word Processing or something like Ultimate eBook Creator?

I have always wanted to be a writer since my 6th grade teacher introduced the class to poetry. My parents or lack there of, were unreceptive. Fortunately that is behind me and I have a very supportive husband. The book I have started was finished in my Word Document but due to a sudden computer crash today, my only back up is from April, where it was unfinished… So I need to start over but I want to do it right, with some insight ? And I love the Courtlight and Crown Service series. I have them all on my kindle. Can’t wait to read more ?

ANSWER FROM TERAH:

Hi Ericka, thanks for the love! I’m sorry about your lost files. Those are a writer’s worst nightmares. For writing, everyone has different habits that are ingrained. I always use Microsoft Word because that’s what I’m used to. George R.R. Martin uses a stripped down processor called WordStar. However most writers I know use Scrivener. Its a dedicated software located on literatureandlatte.com that keeps your work in separate folders and manageable files.

In order to keep from loosing it still, I recommend saving your working file in multiple places. You can email it to yourself, upload it to the Cloud or to a service like Dropbox, or have auto-backs on your computer into a separate hard drive.

Whatever works for you. Good luck!

LETTER TWO FROM SOPHIE (a 7th grade student):

Hi! I am doing a school book report that is due, and I chose Terah Edun’s book – Sworn to Raise. (It’s an awesome book by the way, cant wait for the new one!!!) and I need information on the author. I was hoping that you could tell me a little bit about your past ex- where you grew up, or where you went to school, as I could not find anything about your background. Thanks!!

ANSWER FROM TERAH:

It was super sweet of you to write me and I’m very sorry that I took more than a week to get back to you. I’m a bit overwhelmed with work.

In answer to your questions:

I grew in Atlanta, GA (my whole family lives in the Southeastern part of the U.S.), I later moved to go to college in Pennsylvania – a women’s institution called Bryn Mawr College, and then I spent some time traveling the world. I’ve lived in Spain, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, South Sudan, and Kenya. I really enjoyed seeing different parts of the globe and I think a lot of those travels bleed over into my writing and give me a great sense of dynamic diversity.

Hope your paper went well!

LETTER THREE FROM POPPY:

Hello, unfortunately I noticed you where doing a rep search a little to late. I just thought I would email to see if there are any more spaces or if there may be some more in the future. In the meantime if there is anything that needs doing that I could help you with please let me know, even if it is just reposting your post and photos I don’t mind! My blog on Instagram is called betweenthebinders…I know it’s a long shot but I thought I would give me a go!

many thanks for your time

ANSWER FROM TERAH:

Hi Poppy,

We would love to have you as an Instagram Rep for #ShatterAnEmpire!

In the Instagram post, we were only looking for 2 #ShatterAnEmpire Reps, but so many dozens of people emailed in that I couldn’t say no to the gracious support. We are so happy to have you on the team and as soon as you confirm you’re good to go. I have some surprises in store for the reps as well. ^.^

Highlights:

On Book Reports, I’m happy to help with assignments but sometimes I don’t get back to readers as quickly as I would like. I’ll be updating teedun.com/teachers with more information, so that your reports and grades aren’t predicated on my ability to answer you super fast.

On #ShatterAnEmpire, for those of you who don’t know, my slogan for all of my books and series that fall within the Algardis Universe (which includes the Courtlight series, the Crown Service series and two as of yet unreleased series – SacredCourt and Algardis) is: Let’s Shatter An Empire!

The hashtag to support any of my books on social media therefore is #ShatterAnEmpire. If you want me to share your pics, your quotes, and your messages just use that tag and it’ll be found no matter the series.

Slogan: Let’s Shatter An Empire

Hashtag: #ShatterAnEmpire

Also I’m on Instagram @terahedun, Twitter @tedunwrites, and Facebook /TerahEdunAuthor.

In My Inbox: Libraries, School Paper, The Holidays

Hi Readers,

I usually post In My Inbox on my TUMBLR account – located here – POST 1, POST 2, POST 3 etc. But I thought I’d try something different and post them on my blog as well. Here’s some of emails I’ve gotten recently and my responses.

LETTER ONE FROM AARON THE STUDENT:

Hi Terah, my name is Aaron. For my American Literature class in school I have to do an author study. I chose to do my study on you because I LOVE your Courtlight, and the Crown Service series! For my author study I have to include a 1 to 2 page biography on the authors life. In order to get full points I have to try to find interesting information that is hard to find on the internet, so I thought I would try to ask you. I can’t wait to start your third series. Just saying I read a lot of fantasy books, and I think you have written my favorite fantasy series. I hope you have the time to reply to me. I would definitely like to put some things in my biography that you think should go into it. Thank you in advance if you reply, and for giving me a series that I can actually read in my free time! Normally I don’t actually do that because I don’t like reading a lot, so I really love your books! Can’t wait for your future books!

ANSWER FROM TERAH

It’s quite an honor that you chose to do your author study on me. Getting this email was both of surprise and a delight, not just as an author but as a former student. It’s been 9 years since I had my last English studies class. AP English Lit actually and I have fond memories of the subject, so I’m delighted to help you.

—–

The easiest thing I’ve found about writing is coming up with the ideas themselves. The stories flood my mind like glimpses of a past life. A girl climbing the rigging of a sailing ship on the high seas one day…and a boy hiding from his dragon contemporaries in a dark alley the next.

I started writing fantasy as a way to combat boredom living overseas as a humanitarian in East Africa. Fantasy was my choice of genre because it’s all I read as a child and teen. My favorite books always took me to new worlds, so it only made sense that when writing I escaped back into those same unique realms.

Building on that desire to write, I wanted to see if people were interested in reading what I had to say. When I first published a book about young mages in an academy, I had to do a lot of studying of my own. I didn’t know what it meant to be an author, much less my own publisher. I had to reach out and make contacts with editors, artists, and book formatters.

I had to budget both my time in making this hobby (at the time) of mine worthwhile, but also see what I wanted to invest financially in the process. After two months of edits, proofing, and formatting I was able to put my first book up on Amazon. Luckily it wasn’t my last and from then I just kept writing what I loved.

What I’ve learned about being a writer is that it’s a lot of hard work and takes a lot of dedication, but when you get it right, and you’ll know when you do, it’s worth it. So my life lesson would be to stay true to yourself and never give up. You never know what you’ll find on the other side of the page after all.

As for my favorite animal…I’ve always been partial to Siberian tigers. They’re beautiful and ferocious. You asked me if there is anywhere in the world that I’ve loved to go see. I’ve been to many continents and countries, but one that I’ve yet to see to is Russia. I’d love to go to St. Petersburg and tour the old Tsarist palaces just to revel in the history of imperial family.

LETTER TWO FROM LINDA THE LIBRARIAN:

We would love to have this series in our collection for our YA’s but I’m having trouble locating all of the books in print format. Please help.

LETTER THREE FROM DIANNA:

Just a quick line to tell you Thank you for your generosity for Across The Arid Seas. I hope you have a tremendously joyful Christmas or whatever you celebrate, and make sure to tell everyone how you feel about them. Life is a mystery and we must take advantage of every moment to appreciate those who are important to us as tomorrow is unknown. Thanks again, Dianna

ANSWER FROM TERAH:

Aww, that’s so sweet of you! Thank YOU so much for being a reader and Happy Holidays as well!

In My Inbox: Paperbacks, French Books, Reviews

Hi Readers,

I thought I would continue this IN MY INBOX feature from earlier, so here we go:

LETTER ONE FROM J:

First of all, i just got the first four books in paperback now. I was wondering when book 5 and 6 might be going into paperback?

This message can be answered at all time when YOU HAVE THE TIME TO DO SO!

Keep writing!!!!!!!

ANSWER FROM TERAH:

Hi J, Thanks so much for buying Books 1 – 4 in paperback. Such an honor and I hope you love the design of the books. The flourishes in the chapter headings are my favorite. ^.^ I’ll be sending Books 5-6 (and hopefully 7) to a formatter now and they should be available for purchase in late September.

LETTER TWO FROM MY FRENCH TRANSLATOR:

I have just finished reviewing the proofreader’s comments. I agree with almost everything (except the commas after the question marks in the dialogues), and her insights were useful!

ANSWER FROM TERAH:

*grins* I love it when my team works together so well, so I’m sharing with you all – my lovely readers. The French translation of SWORN TO RAISE: COURTLIGHT #1 is now populating to all retailers and it’s so exciting. We’ve already gotten sales. Book 2 will be available in mid-fall. If you read French, you can find everything you need over at: teedun.com/francais
LETTER THREE FROM LOUISA:

My post went live today 🙂 Here’s my link.

ANSWER FROM TERAH:

How awesome is this?! This email actually went to Rachel (Author Assistant) and then to me but you get the drift. Thank you so much Louisa for sharing your reviews of all six Courtlight books on Words I Write Crazy!

You can see her reviews of the Sworn To Raise: Courtlight #1, Sworn To Transfer: Courtlight #2, and Sworn To Conflict: Courtlight #3 on this page.  Sworn To Secrecy: Courtlight #4, Sworn To Defiance: Courtlight #5, and Sworn To Ascension: Courtlight #6 are here.

Highlights:

I was reminded of Michelle Saraga’s books while reading these books, and that was just really fantastic!

I just dove into these books (how did I wait so long?) and the pages just flew right on by!
